Abdullah ibn Ubayy

Abdullah ibn Ubbay was a leader of Madinah's hypocrites and pagans (munafiqun). He pretended to be with the Muslims but was never on their side. He had secretly hated the Prophet Muhammad since the time of the Hijrah. He dreamt of becoming the ruler of Madinah and saw the Prophet's growing popularity and strenght as a threat. Therefore, he worked against him and the interests of the Muslims.

He plotted against the Muslims with various Quraysh leaders and Jewish tribes like the Banu Nadir. It was his treachery which was mainly responsible for the defeat of the Muslims at the battle of Uhud. At the last moment, he turned back from the battleground along with his 300 men. He also played a major rule in spreading lies about the Prophet's wife, Aishah.

In spite of his treacherous acts, the Prophet did not allow his Companions to kill him, When he died, the Prophet himself led his burial prayer.
